Selected to Represent the West Coast – But Still Overlooked at Home
Report by: George April
While many children are celebrated for their sports achievements, one silent champion walks the halls of Hopefield Primary, unseen, unmentioned, but unmatched on the court.
Her name is Monray Samuels, and she is the only learner from her school selected to represent the West Coast in 2025.
In the 2024 netball season, where talent truly had a chance to shine, Monray took every opportunity with both hands. She was named “Player of the Day” in nearly every match she played. It’s not just a reflection of her skill, but of her determination, her dreams… and her silence.
Because despite her incredible achievements, Monray receives no recognition from her school.
No photos on school social media.
No proud announcements.
No celebration of her name.
But we see her.
Monray doesn’t have loud supporters or fancy connections, just a dream, and a heart that beats for netball. She has now received an invitation to represent the West Coast District at the Inter-District Netball Tournament. Sadly, her single mother is unable to cover the full cost of the trip.
Yet still… she doesn’t give up.
That’s why we ask – can you help?
Whether you’re a local business or just a caring person with a few rands to spare, your support can make a world of difference. Help us make this young girl’s dream a reality. Help her represent Hopefield – and the West Coast – with pride, even if her own school never acknowledged her.
If you would like to contribute:
Please send a WhatsApp message to her mother, Rodean Samuels, at 060 454 1303.
The total cost of the trip is R4,110.00, and all funds must be paid by June 30, 2025, to the West Coast Schools Netball Union.
The team departs on July 16, with a final training camp on Tuesday, July 15, at HS Dirkie Uys in Moorreesburg.
This is more than just a sports story.
It’s a chance to show a young girl:
You are seen.
You are valued.
You are a champion.
Note from the Founder of West Coast Sports Solutions
This story is not intended as an attack on any individual, school, or member of staff. It is simply a call for awareness, a reminder that every child deserves recognition, especially those who have worked hard to excel in sport at provincial or national level.
As someone who has seen the power of sport to change lives, I believe that young athletes must be celebrated, particularly at primary school level where dreams are still forming and self-belief is fragile.
It is deeply concerning when children are overlooked, not because of their talent or effort, but simply because their parents are not teachers or considered “important” in the community.
This is unacceptable……!
We must ensure that all children are treated equally, no matter their background. Recognition and encouragement are not privileges for a few; they are the right of every child who gives their best.
At West Coast Sports Solutions, we will continue to stand for fairness, opportunity, and dignity – especially for those who are too young or too humble to ask for it themselves.
