DURBAN TEEN RACEWALKER APPEALS FOR SCHOLARSHIP TO PURSUE HIS DREAM

DURBAN:- Despite limited opportunities at his current school, 15-year-old racewalker Sanele Masango from Umlazi, Durban, continues to prove that determination and hard work can overcome many obstacles.
The talented young athlete recently contacted West Coast Sports Solutions with a heartfelt appeal for assistance in securing a scholarship that would allow him to further develop both his academic and sporting potential.
According to Sanele, the school he currently attends places a strong emphasis on academics but does not offer athletics as part of its sporting programme. As a result, he has had to work much harder than many of his competitors simply to participate in major competitions.
“The school I currently go to focuses mainly on academics and does not have athletics,” Sanele explained. “I had to undergo rigorous meetings with the office in order to compete at the ASA Age Groups this year. The same happened for the SASA Nationals.”
Despite these challenges, Sanele’s performances have been impressive. At the ASA Age Group Championships in Germiston, he achieved a sixth-place finish. He followed this up with an outstanding bronze medal performance at the SASA National Championships, finishing third in the country.
His commitment to training is equally remarkable. School only ends at 4pm each day, and his training facility is located approximately 1.7 kilometres from his home. By the time he reaches the track, valuable training time has already been lost, forcing him to rely heavily on training sessions over weekends.
Yet even with these limitations, Sanele continues to excel both on the track and in the classroom. – “My academics are well maintained,” he said. “I have managed to achieve four A symbols every term since 2024.”
The young athlete believes that access to better training facilities, proper equipment and additional training time could significantly improve his performances and help him reach even greater heights in the sport of racewalking.
Sanele’s story is a powerful reminder that South Africa is filled with talented young athletes whose dreams often depend on opportunities rather than ability. His achievements demonstrate not only athletic talent but also discipline, perseverance and a commitment to academic excellence.
West Coast Sports Solutions believes that young people like Sanele deserve every opportunity to succeed. Schools, sports academies, sponsors, scholarship providers and athletics organisations interested in assisting this promising young athlete are encouraged to make contact.
As Sanele continues his journey, one thing is clear: with the right support, this determined young racewalker could have a very bright future ahead of him.
Interested sponsors, schools or scholarship providers are encouraged to contact Sanele directly through his email: sanelemasango279@gmail.com
