Help Us Build a Safe Swimming Pool
In the small town of Hopefield on the Cape West Coast, the sound of laughter echoes from the local river where children swim and play. But beneath this seemingly innocent joy lies a hidden danger—a polluted salt river, dense with reeds, flowing through the industrial area of our community.
The children of Hopefield have no safe alternative. As a result, they are exposed daily to health hazards and an even greater threat—venomous snakes. In the last two weeks alone, three cobra snakes have been caught in the area, including one dangerously close to the river where children often swim. The risk is terrifying: one bite from a yellow cobra could end a life in minutes.
A Forgotten Plea
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hopefield’s need for a swimming pool reached national attention. ETV visited our town and featured a story on our mission to build a safe swimming pool for the children. Together with two national swimmers, we made a heartfelt plea for help. Sadly, the story ended there.
Now, years later, the dangers remain. The polluted river continues to be the only option for over 2,000 children, and the dream of a clean, safe swimming pool remains just that—a dream.
A Vision for Change
At West Coast Sports Solutions, we believe every child deserves a safe place to swim, play, and grow. A community swimming pool in Hopefield would be more than just a pool—it would be:
- A Lifesaving Solution: A safe alternative to the polluted river and the lurking danger of snakes.
- An Educational Hub: A space where children can learn water safety and swimming skills.

The estimated cost of building this pool, including the first year of maintenance and operation, is R1.7 million – R2.75 million. It’s a significant investment, but the impact it will have on the lives of our children is priceless.
